In the refreshed 2021 Tesla Model S, there’s big changes on the steering wheel.
You've probably never seen anything like this. It's not round. The previous traditional design has been swapped for a rectangular yoke, kind of like what pilots use to steer an aircraft. It looks pretty cool.

Also, the gear shift stalk has been removed, and this function has been immigrated to the touchscreen. And those touch-sensitive buttons on the steering wheel have replaced the horn and turn signal. These are major changes. So what's it like to drive this refreshed model with those new changes?

Hereby we would like to share some of the ideas about those new changes, ideas and feedbacks are from our test drive demo and from some Tesla users.

The new changes on the steering wheel do bring some benefits. One of the main benefits is to bring a clearer view of the car’s gauges and a panoramic view out the windshield.

However, it is little bit awkward to use this yoke comparing to a traditional round one. Its shape makes sharp turns, parking maneuvers and navigating small, busy parking lots more complicated than what most drivers are likely used to. With no turn signal stalk to push up and down, signaling a turn is now done with those small and touch-sensitive buttons, which forces drivers to taking eyes off the road to choose the correct direction. And if you need to signal out in a quick turn, the small indicated arrows are upside down while the wheel is turning. You might find everything reversed and confused, not easy to signal out properly and promptly, which eventually causing a safety concern.

Also, the new Model S doesn’t have a gear shift stalk. The car itself will now try to anticipate which gear you intend to be in and ask you to push the brake to activate it. Or drivers can utilize a section of the touch screen and push the car icon in the direction that you want to go. All the drive, reverse and park etc are shifted to touchscreen. These may also quite distract because both driver’s eyes and hands are busy on the operation.

If you need to honk at another car? That function is also a small touch-sensitive button now, which might be difficult to find quickly in an emergency situation.

Those worried feedbacks are mainly from drivers who live in country/city with a lot roundabouts and turns. It may be fine (not ideal) in stroad filled big cities, which by the way is not the rest of the places look like. And if you take some time you might finally get used to it, but it is just not a enjoyable of a driving experience.

After attentively listen to users’ voices, Veekys keeps innovating and strives for solutions.
Finally, we have brought those aftermarket stalks back to Model S/X, as well as the refreshed Model 3 highland, bringing a more enjoyable and smoother driving experience to all our Tesla users.
